Explosion at Lebanon's capital

Image
At least 50 people were killed in a massive explosion that shook the Lebanese capital, Beirut, on Tuesday evening, the health minister said. The blast appears to have been centered on the city's port area. A CNN producer witnessed "chaotic scene" in Beirut emergency room following the explosion. Lebanon state-run NNA news reported that a major fire broke out near Beirut port and firefighting teams rushed to the scene and worked to put out the fire. Lebanese Prime Minister Hassan Diab said that Tuesday’s explosion in the Lebanese capital “will not pass without accountability” and “those responsible will pay for what happened.” He said that an investigation into the explosion will include “revelations that will be announced about this dangerous warehouse which has been present since 2014,” without providing any additional details. Describing the explosion as a “catastrophe,” he said in a televised statement that the priority now was to recover the dead and treat t

Growing old isn’t a natural part of life—it’s a disease that needs a cure.

The oldest-known living person is Kane Tanaka, a Japanese woman who is a mind-boggling 116 years old. But if you ask David Sinclair, he’d argue that 116 is just middle age. At least, he thinks it should be. Sinclair is one of the leading scientists in the field of aging, and he believes that growing old isn’t a natural part of life—it’s a disease that needs a cure. Sounds crazy, right? Sinclair, a Harvard professor who made Time’s list of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2014, will acquiesce that everyone has to die at some point, but he argues that we can double our life expectancy and live healthy, active lives right up until the end. His 2019 book, Lifespan: Why We Age and Why We Don’t Have To ($28, Atria Books), out this fall, details the cutting-edge science that’s taking place in the field of longevity right now. The quick takeaway from this not-so-quick read: scientists are tossing out previous assumptions about aging, and they’ve discovered several tools that you

Over the years I have come to realise something very important about day-to-day living. The fact that it is, in fact, day-to-day. Each day is a new day and must be treated as such. But there’s a problem with this. If there’s one thing I’ve noticed as I’ve grown up, it’s that there simply aren’t enough hours in a day. We get caught up in study and Netflix and work and suddenly there is nothing of the day left. One day is technically twenty four hours. Technically. But at least eight of that is spent sleeping. Another few hours is spent between tasks, getting ready and procrastinating. For many, work or school takes up many more hours of the day. So taking all that into account, what are we left with? How do we truly live when it seems there is no time to? We make the time count. It isn’t as easy as that, I know from experience. But it is so much easier than people make it out to be. Living in the moment is absolutely the most important part of our existence, this I believe. One of my fa
